Only a month after Condor Airlines launched San Antonio’s first-ever nonstop flight to Europe, the service has been scaled back for next year.
On May 17, the German carrier launched its air service to Frankfurt (FRA), with a direct flight offered from the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) three times a week all summer long.
After much fanfare in terminal A, 200 travelers boarded a striped plane that had 302 available seats, according to an airport spokeswoman. The air service was locked in through Sept. 6 via an agreement with the City of San Antonio and Greater:SATX.
Now a new agreement has been reached to continue service next year, but with the seasonal flight offered only on Mondays and Fridays. The Wednesday travel day has been eliminated from the schedule.
The change in air service was revealed when Condor released its 2025 timetables indicating fewer departure days from San Antonio, and was recently confirmed by San Antonio officials.
This year and next, Condor is providing service to Frankfurt from 18 North American cities, including San Antonio. For 2025, the cities of Boston and Vancouver gained a day, going from six days a week to daily, on the timetable.
Changes in frequency, days of service and seasonal pivots are not uncommon for new routes as airlines work to determine what works best, a statement from Greater:SATX spokeswoman Jamie Bloodsworth Lutrell said.
“A Monday and Friday schedule for summer travel to and from Europe works well, and we understand that those are currently the busiest nights,” she said, adding that discussions about 2026 have already begun. “As always, the key to sustaining trans-Atlantic service is people using it, so we encourage travelers to begin making their 2025 summer plans to fly Condor now.”
Data shared on an air travel discussion board shows that in May, Condor sold 74% of its seats for the SAT-to-FRA route’s outbound flights, but only 39% of the seats on flights originating in Frankfurt and headed to San Antonio.
At the May launch, Visit San Antonio President and CEO Marc Anderson called the occasion “long overdue” and one that “further establishes San Antonio as a city worthy of global investment and a city worthy of being a global brand known throughout the entire world.”
But making the city known to potential visitors in Germany will take some time, he said. Visit SA has established a tourism office in Germany to market the flight.
“We anticipated that initially most of the purchases for this flight would be made from Texas, with a smaller portion being from Germany,” Anderson said. “We obviously want to turn that around, but it will take time as we seek to improve the awareness of San Antonio and Texas in Europe.”
A two-year air service agreement between Condor and the City of San Antonio includes an incentive package worth almost $1.3 million in airport use fee waivers and marketing support. The incentive program is designed to attract and support carriers that provide nonstop service to certain parts of the world for one to two years, or seasonal service for three months.
A year ago, City Council doubled the fee waivers, from 50% to 100%, that could be offered during the second year of service for certain unserved international routes.
Through an Air Service Development Fund provided by Greater:SATX and Visit San Antonio, the airline also could receive a financial rebate if revenue thresholds are not met. “We will not know if any monies will need to be paid out until the end of the season,” Lutrell said.
“We are thrilled to see the airline is committed to serving San Antonio again in 2025,” Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the city’s aviation department, said. “Thousands of South Texans have utilized the airline’s service to Frankfurt and beyond so far this summer and we look forward to growing our partnership to provide service to Europe for the people of our region.”
