Oliver Glasner, a former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach, has been appointed as the new manager of Crystal Palace, replacing Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park. Glasner, who was born in Austria in 1974, spent his entire playing career in his home country, primarily at SV Ried where he played 571 times. He won the Austrian Cup twice with Ried and helped the club reach the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in 1995. His playing career ended prematurely due to a subdural haematoma following a clash of heads with a Rapid Vienna player.
After retiring as a player, Glasner became a sporting co-ordinator at Red Bull Salzburg before taking on coaching roles at Ried and LASK. He gained recognition in Germany during successful spells at Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, achieving Europa League glory with Frankfurt in 2022. He is known for his intense tactical approach and emphasis on entertaining football, as well as his honest and authentic communication style with players.
Palace can expect a passionate and demanding manager in Glasner, who values intense tempo without the ball and attractive possession-based football. He emphasizes honesty and trust with players, prioritizing authenticity in his interactions. Despite his tactical acumen and coaching successes, Glasner has shown a more confrontational side off the pitch, as seen in his viral response to a journalist questioning his team’s commitment after a defeat with Frankfurt.
