Frankfort High School in Indiana was briefly put on lockdown after a student was found to be armed with an unloaded gun on Thursday morning. The firearm was discovered after a fight erupted in a school bathroom around 8 a.m., with an ammunition magazine falling out of the student’s waistband during the altercation. The 17-year-old student was immediately taken into custody by a school resource officer, after a small caliber handgun was found on the student. Although no ammunition was discovered in the school or on the school bus the student rode, the high school and middle school were placed on lockdown as a precaution while the investigation was ongoing.
Despite the gun being unloaded, both schools remained on lockdown until 9:40 a.m., when operations resumed as normal. The 17-year-old student was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm on school property and was subsequently taken to a juvenile detention facility. The formal charges will be determined by a prosecutor. The Police Chief, Scott Shoemaker, expressed gratitude to the students who reported the incident to school officials and the resource officer, emphasizing the long-standing partnership between Frankfort Police Department and Community Schools of Frankfort. The Superintendent, Dr. Matt Rhoda, commended the coordinated response between the schools and the police department in ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
